Smart Gilas Pilipinas NT nips Japan NT, 83-76. They've turned them into Sushi and Sashimi! Lol.

source: Waylon Galvez | mb.com.ph   WUHAN, China — The Smart-Gilas Pilipinas continued its steady improvement as it dealt Japan its first setback with a come-from-behind 83-76 victory to clinch an outright quarterfinal berth in the FIBA-Asia Championship Tuesday at the Wuhan Gymnasium here. Playing aggressive inside the shaded lane, the Nationals relied anew on the 6-foot-11 center Marcus Douthit and the outside shooting of Marcio Lassiter and Jimmy Alapag in the payoff period to beat the Japanese. In a fitting sequel to his brilliant game against Jordan the other day, Douthit collected 25 points aside from grabbing 18 rebounds, six of which on the offensive board. He also had three blocks to highlight his all-around game. Lassiter, in his second game together with Chris Lutz after being banned in the first round, and Alapag added 15 points apiece while forward Kelly Williams had 12 points for the Nationals. The win hiked the win-loss record of Smart-Gilas to 3-

Under this kind of circumstances, only the tough players with the big heart can win this kind of game. It seemed everything was stacked against the Nationals as the match was already marred by controversy even before the opening tip off. Despite being given the green light by the Internation

MGM Grand , Las Vegas - Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26KOs) knocked out Victor Ortiz (29-3, 22KOs) in the fourth round to capture the WBC welterweight title. The first minute of the fight was a clear indicator that Mayweather's speed was still there and he was landing accurate punches while making Ortiz miss his counters . In the second round, Mayweather stayed true to his promise and he did exchange with Ortiz in spurts. Ortiz would rush in and get Mayweather against the ropes while firing punches, but he missed most of his punches. Mayweather's counters were accurate and hitting the target almost every time. Mayweather was picking him off in the third round and blocking almost everything in return. Mayweather started unloading at the start of the fourth round. Ortiz was able to fight him off. Rugby World Cup 2011:South Africa dismantles Fiji, 49-3.

WELLINGTON, 17 Sept. - The 49-3 scoreline pointed to irresistible attacking, but victorious South African captain John Smit was equally satisfied by the way his side's defending shut out Fiji. The world champions ran in six tries to overwhelm their Pool D rivals at Wellington Regional Stadium on Saturday, but they also kept the free-running Fijians to a solitary penalty. "We had some work to do and we put in a quality first 40 (minutes)," Smit said. "It was what we needed and I'm happy to keep a team like Fiji off our try-line." Morné Steyn weighed in with 21 points, including a try just after the hour mark to bring up a bonus point for the Springboks as the Fijians were overwhelmed by an impressive display of pace and power. Fiji captain Deacon Manu admitted: "It was a difficult game today and South Africa showed why they are world champions. They played with intensity for 80 minutes and it was a difficult old time for us." Intense

Rugby World Cup 2011:Ireland edged Australia, 15-6.

AUCKLAND, 17 Sept. - Ireland put the boot into Australia's Rugby World Cup hopes with a 15-6 victory in their Pool C game at Eden Park on Saturday night. Boasting one of the slickest backlines in the tournament, the Wallabies struggled to live up to their billing and the Irish got home on the back of four penalties and a drop goal before a crowd of 58,678. As much as full back Kurtley Beale tried to weave his magic, Ireland stood firm with a defence that refused to buckle. "It was the performance we knew we had in us," said Ireland captain Brian O'Driscoll. "You could swear you were in Dublin with this crowd and it was our job to give them something to cheer about." Wallabies skipper James Horwill said: "Ireland did well and we played some dumb rugby. We were not good enough." Having won 20 of their 29 clashes with Ireland, with another match being drawn, Australia were favourites on paper, though these two countries have produced some

NVERCARGILL, 17 Sept. - Argentina bounced back from their narrow defeat to England by running in four first-half tries before sealing a 43-8 bonus-point win in their Pool B clash with Romania on Saturday. Although the match was billed as a battle between the two powerful packs, the Pumas were having none of it and chose to run at every opportunity on a bright but breezy afternoon at Rugby Park Stadium. After the match, captain Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe expressed his satisfaction with the crucial victory. "We were desperate to get a win, that was our only option today," he said.
