TAIPEI – LA Tenorio, the smallest man in the Jones Cup playing with the biggest heart, on Sunday delivered the goods that led Smart Gilas-Pilipinas to a gut-wrenching 76-75 victory over the United States for the 34th Jones Cup title at the Taipei PE College gym here.
The 5-foot-8 Tenorio scored 11 points in the fourth period, all of them clutch, and had the biggest rebound of the night – plucked down in the land of the giants – as the Philippines turned the tables on the highly-fancied Americans to win here for the fourth time.
“I admit, we are already very tired,” Tenorio told the international media after finishing with 20 points. “But like Michael Jordan said: ‘The heart never gets tired.”
“It was all heart for us out there,” he continued.
The Philippines trailed by as large as 14 in the first half and by 13 late in the third quarter, only to dig deep within its resolve to pound out the win.
Tenorio was at the forefront of it all, shooting seven of his 11 fourth quarter points in a 10-0 spurt to open hostilities in the period, as the Philippines took a 61-59 lead after ending the third period with a 51-59 deficit.
It was nip-and-tuck from there as the Philippine defense anchored on Marcus Douthit held, with the game boiling down to the last few possessions where the Filipinos cashed in on most of them.
“I’m in kind of a loss for words right now because my guys played their hearts out,” American coach Travis McAvene said. “We just didn’t make the stops that we needed in the last 30 seconds.
“And that’s basketball, games are won or lost on stops, free throws and layups.”
