Smart Gilas Team Pilipinas bows down to Iran, 77-60.

TOKYO – Smart Gilas Pilipinas went scoreless in a crucial stretch in the second half and failed to recover, botching a shot at the FIBA Asia Cup finals with a 60-77 loss to Iran at the Ota Gymnasium here today. The Nationals were down by only three at 47-50 before going on a dry spell for over four minutes, allowing the Iranians to build momentum for the 17-point victory and a crack at the coveted crown. SBP to conduct talent search for new Smart Gilas Pool.  source: Reynaldo Belen |  interaksyon.com The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is planning a nationwide search for non-professional players to become part of the second incarnation of the SMART-Gilas Pilipinas national program. “We want to widen the search by tapping both the known and unknown players,” said SBP executive director Sonny Barrios. “The known players, of course, are those playing in the collegiate and amateur leagues, like those present members from the Sinag Pilipinas team that won the SEA Games gold medal and the unknown talents, who may have the potential, but have yet to be discovered.” The planned search is scheduled after a new coach is named for a program in January. Sinag Pilipinas reached the gold medal round in the Southeast Asian Games (SEAG) men’s basketball by beating Malaysia, 103-74, in the semis held at the Britama Arena in Indonesia. The Filipino dribblers slipped away in the fourth quarter after figuring in 3 closely-fought quarters against the Malaysians. Sinag Pilipinas, led by mainstays Keifer Ravena, Greg Slaughter and Cliford Hodge, only led by an average of 4 points against Malaysia in the first 3 quarters, 23-19, 44-41 and 49-44. But RR Garcia started hitting his mark in the fourth quarter to spark Sinag Pilipinas’ breakaway from Malaysia. Slaughter topscored for the Philippines with 16 points. MANILA, Philippines – Sinag Pilipinas booked a trip to the semis as it overpowered Thailand , 103-69, at the end of the group stage in the 26 th Southeast Asian Games men’s basketball today in the BritAma Arena in Indonesia. The win put the Filipinos on top of  Group A with 3-0 mark and will meet the second place in Group B possibly, host Indonesia, in the crossover semis. Posing the toughest challenge in their group yet, Thailand zoomed to a fast start scoring the game’s first five points.  But Sinag Pilipinas rallied behind the core of the four-time UAAP champion Ateneo Blue Eagles to overtake Thailand in the first canto and the rest of the team took it from there. Emman Monfort’s triple touched off a 22-7 exchange as the Filipinos opened up their first double digit lead at 10, 22-12, halfway through the opening period. The  Philippines  failed to duplicate its 83-72 win over the Japanese in the second round. The Olsen Racela-mentored squad, which entered the final round with a 5-0 card, also dropped its second straight game in the tournament following a 67-58 setback to South Korea in the semifinals Thursday night. Team Pilipinas U-16 edged Japan NT U-16, 83-72.

Philippines U16 - Japan U16 83:72 Philippines entered the U16 Asia Championship quarterfinal stage undefeated. They wrapped up their Qualifying Round campaign with victory over Japan.  Rodolfo Alejandro  (175-G-95) stepped up with 36 points to lead the winners. Philippines thus clinched the top spot in Group F. Japan finished second with only one loss to their record. Japan overcame a sloppy start to take a 22:21 lead after ten minutes. But Philippines pulled ahead early in the second term. They finished the half strongly establishing a 48:36 lead. Philippines kept Japan at bay throughout the third term. They arrived at the final break up by as many as 13 points 70:57. The margin grew at 16-point mark midway through the final stanza.
