WUHAN, China – The Smart-Gilas Pilipinas produced another big defensive effort in the second half to outlast Syria, 75-52, and complete a sweep of its second round campaign in the FIBA-Asia Championship Wednesday at the Wuhan Gymnasium here.

Playing full-court pressure defense, the quarterfinal-bound national team held Syria to just three field goals in the final quarter while outscoring its opponent, 26-7, as Smart-Gilas finished with a 4-1 win-loss record after the preliminaries of the Asian Championship.

Marcus Douthit was the only Smart-Gilas player in double digits with 20 points as the rest struggled to find their offensive rhythm particularly in the first half where the national team fell behind by 10 points, 32-22, late in the second quarter.

Smart-Gilas shot just 10-of-36 from the field with six turnovers, while the also-ran Syria converted 13-of-31 with three three-pointers. The Syrians were up, 32-23, at the turn and appeared headed for an upset win.

The Syrians were still in control of the game early in the third frame before the Nationals surged ahead, 42-41, on Douthit’s jumper.

Syria’s Alsaman Hazem Mohamad made two shots from the free throw line when Douthit was given a technical foul to retake the lead, 43-42, late in the third. That proved to be Syria’s last gallant stand.

And just like their game against Jordan and Japan, the Nationals went to Douthit and the 6-foot-11 center responded with clutch baskets in the shaded lane.

That perked up JV Casio, Chris Lutz, Kelly Williams and Ranidel de Ocampo as they helped Douthit turn things around after coming through with a 7-2 run for a 49-45 lead entering the fourth period.

Smart-Gilas continued to put pressure in the final frame and Syria failed to recover as Douthit, de Ocampo, Marcio Lassiter and Chris Tiu delivered the telling blows.

“Syria is not great team but they are hardworking,” said Smart-Gilas Serbian mentor Rajko Toroman, whose team controlled the boards, 48-38. “We had a problem offensively and they had some luck shots. We understand that every game we have to play 100 percent.”

“In the second half we played good basketball, we were attacking them,” added Toroman as the Nationals will either face Chinese Taipei or South Korea in the knockout quarterfinal round on Friday in this qualifier for the 2012 London Olympics.

With its 4-1 card, the national team is at second place in Group F, following wins against Jordan (72-64) last Monday and Japan, 83-76, last Tuesday.
