PHL Davis Cuppers drop opening singles matches

The Philippines suffered consecutive losses in their opening singles matches against Japan in the 2011 Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Zone Group I tie on Friday at the Plantation Bay Spa and Resort in Lapu Lapu City, Cebu.

It seemed that age caught up with Cecil Mamiit, 34, who dropped a marathon 4-6, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 7-6 (3), 7-9 match against 22-year-old Tatsuma Ito of Japan, while Davis Cup veteran Johnny Arcilla was trounced by Japan’s number one player Go Soeda, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

Mamiit, the country's top netter, rallied from a 2-4 deficit in the fourth set to win by tie brek and force a deciding fifth set. He managed to win the first four games in the deciding frame, but allowed Soeda, Japan's second-ranked netter, to regain his composure.

Mamiit finally lost his poise and committed one unforced error after the other to surrender the match to his youthful and aggressive Japanese rival.

"I was disappointed. I felt he got better and better when I was up by four games,"said Mamiit, who dropped his second match against the 171st-ranked opponent. He also lost to Ito in last year's tie in Japan, 4-6, 6-7 (4), which led to a 5-0 win for the hosts.

The five-and-a-half-hour match was played at the newly-constructed slow courts inside one of Cebu's popular resorts.

While Mamiit fought hard against Ito, Arcilla, a last-minute replacement for Filipino-American Treat Conrad Huey, suffered a straight-sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 setback versus Soeda.

Huey was earlier chosen to face Soeda but suffered leg cramps before the match. The doubles specialist is even doubtful for Saturday's doubles match.

He was supposed to team up with Mamiit and try to keep the Philippines alive in the Group I tie when they face Japan's Hiroki Kondo and Takao Suzuki.

The Philippines is hoping to end its string of misfortunes against Japan after losing in their 1996, 2008 and 2010 match-ups. The last time the Philippines defeated Japan was in 1995. – JVP, KY, GMA News
