Smart Gilas Pilipinas NT defeats Barangay Ginebra Kings, 111-104 and clinched the 1st outright semis berth.
We're 7-1 now baby! Woohoo! Time and time again, Smart Gilas Pilipinas proved to the critics that they can compete with or without their key players by defeating the Barangay Tagay, I mean Ginebra Kings, 111-104 in 2011 PBA Commissioner's Cup last March 30, 2011 in Araneta Coliseum.
The ever trusted "True Blue Pinoy" Marcus Douthit leads the Gilas charge by making 30 points and supported by Marcio Lassiter with 21 points.
Douthit, who missed a 98-97 win over Powerade last Sunday to rest a sprain, scored 14 of his conference-high-tying 30 points in the final canto, including seven straight that plucked Gilas for good from a 97-91 count inside the last 2:00.
It was the seventh win in eight games for the Nationals, assuring them of the first of twooutright semis berths rewarded the top two finishers in the nine-game eliminations.
“I think we played good basketball, we played a great game. I think we showed we had great character in difficult moments,” said Gilas head coach Rajko Toroman, whose team played on minus Chris Tiu, who is out with a left shoulder strain.
“To be in the semifinals is great for us. Probably nobody expected we can play at this level,”
he added.
Smart-Gilas still has to wind up its elims assignments against sister team Meralco on Saturday at the Tacloban Convention Center and Toroman said his team will still go all-out.
“Our goal is September (FIBA-Asia championship in China) and I want this team to improve its confidence. There is also the May (FIBA-Asia) Champions Cup and this is our preparation time. I will not rest anybody and we will try to win that game against Meralco.”
The defeat cut short Ginebra’s winning streak at four and dropped it to a 5-3 slate.
The Kings, however, can still grab the second automatic semis spot if they win over Talk N Text on Sunday and the Tropang Texters also lose to B-MEG Derby Ace tomorrow, tying them at 6-3.
All ties will be broken via the PBA quotient system.
Nate Brumfield, Willie Miller and Mark Caguioa each finished with 21 points for the Kings, but missed crucial attempts in the stretch after boosting their team to within 84-89 and 88-93, the last with still 3:50 to go.
Barangay Ginebra also missed 13 of 36 free throw attempts, made only five triples to Gilas’ 13 and got walloped off the boards 39-47.
Lassiter provided Gilas with the quick start Toroman wanted, going 3-for-4 from beyond the arc and making all three of his two-point shots for 15 points that propelled the team to a 29-13 spread.
JV Casio picked up from where Lassiter left off, going 4-for-5 in triples and helped stretch the difference to 18 points several times, the last at 42-24 before Brumfield, Miller and Caguioa led Ginebra’s fightback.
Robert Labagala, Ginebra’s second round pick in the draft and activated in lieu of the injured Jayjay Helterbrand, also lent a hand with two triples that helped whittle the deficit to 40-52 at the half and 69-79 going into the final period.
The scores:
Smart Gilas 111 - Douthit 30, Lassiter 21, Casio 16, Lutz 15, Baracael 11, Aguilar 10, Slaughter 4, Ramos 2, Barroca 2, Ababou 0.

PS:Until now, the PBA Fantards can't accept that this so-called "Amateur Team" is beating the hell out of PBA "Pro-Teams". They are keep on blaming that reason that Gilas is winning against the PBA Teams is they have a 6'11'' Import. What a lame excuse! if PBA will not change their system and adapt the International Rules, they can't compete against the best leagues in Asia. Why don't these fantards support our national team for a change?!
