MANILA, Philippines – There were minimal surprises in the 2011 PBA Rookie Draft and much of the eye-openers were really on the trades that were consummated prior to the actual draft over at the Robinson’s Place in Ermita.
Indeed, it was a rainy event that saw several teams such as Meralco, Powerade, TnT, Barako Bull and Petron cop veterans to beef up their respective rosters and get a chance to recruit some players in the draft.
Meralco, Powerade and TnT completed a three-team deal which saw Meralco acquire the Texters number 7 pick in the first round. The deal also saw the Bolts add former TnT enforcer Mark Yee and shooter Mark Macapagal (formerly of the Powerade Tigers) to their roster.
TnT on the other hand received Shawn Weistein and BamBam Gamalinda, while Powerade got Chris Timberlake and Ogie Menor. Powerade also got the last pick of the second round from TnT.
Petron welcomed back Cebuano hotshot Dondon Hontiveros to its fold after trading Sunday Salvacion, Mick Pennisi and future picks. Petron also got Carlo Sharma who will be reunited with his brother, the injured Rabeh Al-Hussaini as well as the right to exchange first round picks.
Today’s PBA trades were a follow-up to the trade consummated, Powerade dealt Doug Kramer and Josh Vanlandingham for Rain or Shine’s JR Quinahan, Norman Gonzales and a couple of future second round picks.
As for the PBA Rookie Draft, a total of 24 rookie hopefuls got drafted led by Smart Gilas players. Former DLSU Archer JV Casio was selected first by Powerade followed by former UE Warrior Paul Lee who was picked second by Rain or Shine.
