CHINESE TAIPEI – Smart Gilas Pilipinas coach Rajko Toroman predicted no less than a third place finish in the William Jones Cup here. He was right on the money.
Humiliated by a 59-78 loss to 7-2 Hamed Haddadi and reigning back-to-back champion Iran, naturalized Marcus Douthit and the rest of the Nationals vented their ire on host Chinese Taipei with an emphatic, merciless 82-72 victory tonight to clinch third place to the dismay of the predominantly hostile hometown crowd at the Hsinjhuang Stadium in New Taipei City.
The 6-10 Douthit, who was reduced to ashes by Haddadi's one-man hatchet job the other day, pounded his way to a game-high 28 points on an impressive 12-of-18 clip from the field and spiked his awesome offensive effort with 11 boards that sealed the Phl's best effort since a Chot Reyes-mentored squad did the trick four years ago.
"Our goal is to be in the top three and we made it," said Toroman, whose team was cheered on by a small but loud crowd headed by Sen. Allan Peter Cayetano and Powerade governor JB Baylon.
It was also a soothing balm to Gilas' broken hearts wrought by the embarrassing defeat at the hands of Haddadi and the Iranians.
"It left a bad taste in the mouth, that Iran loss yesterday (Saturday) because we played very, very bad," said Toroman. "But we played good, we need this game badly for our confidence and I congratulate my players because it’s not easy to play nine straight games."
Marcio Lassiter, Dondon Hontiveros and Mark Barroca chipped in 16, 13 and 10 points, respectively, that proved enough to fill the void left by JV Casio and Chris Lutz, who were sidelined by as swollen left knee and a swollen elbow, respectively.
Chris Tiu struggled with just a point but he and Barroca, who played with a sprained ankle he suffered late in the Iran defeat, had a decent job at the backcourt that made Casio's absence hardly felt.

"We responded well from a bad game last night (Saturday), the guys came out and played with aggression and a lot of energy even though we're playing without our two guys," said Douthit.
"My hats off also to our wings for denying their shooters," he added.
The Filipinos were already celebrating as early as midway in the fourth quarter when the high-leaping Japeth Aguilar flushed in a rim-rattling slam off an eye-in-the-sky play from Lassiter.
The lead was trimmed down only after the host country launched a gritty run that wasn't enough to turn the tide in its favor.
Douthit was a brute at the onset as he bullied his way through the reed-thin Taipei defense as he exploded with 20 points--nine in the first quarter and 11 in the second--as the Filipinos led by 10 points twice before going into the break with a 43-34 cushion.
Chien Chia Hung, a 6-5 bruiser, kept Taipei in the game with sneaky shots over the taller, slower Douthit and twice pushed his team to within two and three-point leads and finished with 14 at halftime.
Earlier, Japan pounced on the absence of Osama Daghles as it stunned Jordan, 77-73, to clinch fifth place.
Meanwhile, Toroman emphasized the need to strengthen up at the power forward position if they hope to succeed in the FIBA-Asia Championship slated Sept. 15-25 in Wuhan, China where a lone berth in the 2012 London Olympics is staked.
"I've been saying all these years that our main problem is at position four," said Toroman.
The Filipinos lost games to the Jordanians, Iranians and even the Koreans mostly because of that particular weakness, which Toroman hopes to fill with the addition of Talk N' Text's Kelly Williams and Ranidel de Ocampo.
Williams and de Ocampo, along with teammate Jimmy Alapag, are rejoining the Nationals after the PBA finale between Talk N' Text and Petron Blaze conludes late this month in time for the four-team joust in Doha, Qatar that features Smart Gilas, Lebanon, Jordan and the host country.
“We need Kelly Williams and Ranidel de Ocampobadly, they can help us get rebounds and defend the position four from other teams,” said Toroman.
The national team stunned Iran, 73-59, in Day 1 of the tournament last Aug. 6 with an out-of-shape Hamed Haddadi, the team’s 7-foot-2 center who played with the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA, before beating Taipei the next day, 90-78.
The Nationals then lost two close matches of their ensuing three games, against Jordan (76-72) and Korea (78-70) while beating the country’s Southeast Asian neighbor Malaysia (86-68). The team closed the eliminations with wins against the United Arab Emirates (95-60) and Japan (94-78).
In the semis though, Haddadi dominated the inside game with 36 points, and Iran controlled the rebounding department, 78-59. The national team also had four assists, the lowest – Toroman said – since he formed Smart-Gilas.
The national team will play in an single round robin in Group D in the FIBA-Asia against China, Bahrain and UAE, and Toroman is confident the team will advance in the next round where the top three teams from groups A and B will be combined in Group E, while the three best teams in groups C and D will be joined together in Group F.
The preliminary records will not be carried over in the second stage where teams will play in another single round robin. The top four teams from groups E and F will advance to the crossover quarterfinals knockout round with the winners moving to the semis and then the Finals.

PS:Congratulations Team Pilipinas! It's good to end this grueling tournament on a high note. As Coach Rajko Toroman said before the game started, this is the test of our character and you showed what you can do when you play as a team, even when you're undermanned. We're all proud of you!

Best of luck to you and more power to Smart Gilas Pilipinas NT!
