Smart-Gilas Pilipinas' game against United Arab Emirates (UAE) is just the calm before the storm.

The Nationals whipped their Middle Eastern opponent Thursday, 95-60, in what served as a warm up game heading to their highly-anticipated match up with rival Japan in the final day of eliminations in the William Jones Cup basketball tournament at the Hsinjhuang Stadium in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

The Japanese have sent only their second-tier team in the tournament, but have been making heads turn of late after upsetting Jordan, 87-70, and giving league leader Korea a big scare before losing, 69-67.

Following their 70-55 win over Malaysia, the Japanese have an even 3-3 card, just above the Nationals who improved to 4-2 after a 78-70 loss to Korea the other day.

"It's going to be a tough game versus Japan," said Smart Gilas mentor Rajko Toroman. "They never give up and play hard. They're not so big and not so strong but they have great shooters.

"They are very quick, they have no pressure since they came here to learn and play. Our approach to the game should be careful."

A victory over Japan should formalize Gilas' entry into the crossover semifinals set Saturday. The top two teams then dispute the title in a winner-take-all match on Sunday.

Marcus Douthit showed the way for the Nationals with 23 points and 15 rebounds, while Chris Lutz added 13. Marcio Lassiter and veteran Asi Taulava, who played his best game in the meet so far, chipped in 10 markers each.

A JV Casio jumper sparked a 28-8 run, bridging the last two quarters, allowed the Nationals to rip the game apart. Gilas' scoring barrage started in the four-minute mark of the third period with Dondon Hontiveros ending it with a lay up with six minutes left in the contest.

The scoring blast stretched a 51-43 lead to a 79-51 advantage. - JVP, GMA News
